1-28 We started
seeing lights of Union Island early this morning and smelling land! I had calculated we would be in Cariacou
Harrisburg harbor by 8 AM but wait, the wind gods that blasted us for three
days just stopped, I mean we were sailing 6.5Knots and then we coasted to .5knots,
so had to roll up the Genny and fire up the diesel wind. I went to bed and left Randy on watch and after
an hour or so he was waking me saying we have wind! Oh the little things that make us happy. After dropping out some Genny we were once
again sailing toward Cariacou. The AIS
(automatic identification system) started sending an alarm of a pending collision. It was not just any ship coming at us but The
world! Check this thing out http://aboardtheworld.com/our_story Anyhow I called up the captain and ask him if
he could see us on radar, to which he replied yes please hold your course and
speed and everything will be fine. Check
out the video of her, we were as close as ½ mile from her needless to say we
are a spec next to her. Raindancer made
the world change course, no small feat!
At last we motored into Harrisburg harbor and dropped the hook, anchor
to you land lubbers, launched the dinghy and put on the merc 3.3. We need to clear in and went to the dinghy
dock. Since I had been here six years
ago nothing has changed, still only a 6ft by maybe 8ft piece of jagged concrete
to get off your dinghy and tie up on an overhead rail 10ft off the water. Fortunately I have a
small dinghy anchor and was able to keep us from getting chewed to bits while
we cleared in. Clearing in is always an
adventure and this was as well but after a few hours Randy and I were on the
beach looking out at the boats having a coldy (that’s cold beer) and a fish sandwich
and the ordeal is quickly forgotten, Oh Well I say……
A friend from home asked if we had fishing poles on board. I told him we didn't need them when the fish here are so cooperative as to jump into the Raindancer during the night and offer themselves up for breakfast.
